Melk

Exhibition

On 8 May 1992, an overview exhibition on the history of the camp was opened in the rooms of the former crematorium in Melk. The exhibition was conceived by Bertrand Perz and Gottfried Fliedl and is essentially based on the research findings of Bertrand Perz, whose study ‘Project Quartz’ at the end of the 1980s was the fundamental scientific work on the history of the Melk camp to this day.

The exhibition focuses on the involvement and co-responsibility of civilian armaments companies - above all Steyr Daimler Puch AG - in the construction of the Melk satellite camp. Two rooms are dedicated to the central purpose of the satellite camp, namely the construction of a tunnel facility with the code name ‘Project Quartz’ under the Wachberg not far from the western railway line near the village of Roggendorf.

In addition, numerous survivor reports, photos and drawings are used to illustrate everyday life and work in the camp, which was characterised by the daily struggle for survival. The evacuation of the camp and the liberation of the Melk concentration camp prisoners in Ebensee on 6 May 1945 are also covered. The exhibition is complemented by a number of original objects from the tunnel system and memorabilia from former Melk concentration camp prisoners.
